The Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition returns for 2022 with some notable changes. Based on the SR5 trim and strictly available with four-wheel-drive and a Double Cab body style, the Trail Edition tacks on some extra adventure-ready flare to the already-capable best-selling midsize Tacoma.
The Tacoma Trail Edition gets a little suspension lift for 2022, which adds 1.1 inches to the truck’s front end courtesy of taller coil springs and 0.5 inch to the rear. The result, when combined with ditching the front air dam, is a pickup with 9.4 inches of ground clearance. All of the Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) safety features are retained despite the lift. The approach angle now sits at 34.0 degrees, the departure at 23.6, and the breakover at 26.4.
A standard tow package allows the V-6-only Tacoma Trail Edition to make the most of its maximum towing capacity of 6,400 pounds. Additionally, a locking rear differential is also standard and ought to afford the truck additional traction in those slow, technical 4×4 sections of the trail that you did—or didn’t—see coming.
Since wheels and tires are important for tackling the path less traveled, the Trail Edition features new 16-inch bronze-painted TRD wheels wrapped in 265/70R16 Goodyear Wrangler tires. The setup increases track width by 0.5 inch for a more aggressive stance. Off-road skid plates borrowed from the Tacoma TRD Off-Road protect the belly of the Trail Edition, keeping components and moving parts shielded from ruthless rocks, debris, and off-road gunk.
The Trail Edition is capable, but also stylish. Modern, sleek, black badging returns for 2022, including a new Trail Edition badge on the tailgate. New hood graphics are also available. The heritage-inspired front grille, first featured on the Tacoma TRD Pro, wears bronze lettering that matches the wheels. Black fabric seating on the inside is complemented by cool tan stitching.
A new exterior color, Lunar Rock, joins the previously available Army Green, Super White, and Midnight Black Metallic. No matter the hue, all 2022 Tacoma Trail Editions wear a body-color rear bumper.
