Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT teased ahead of May 10 reveal

Mercedes-Benz’s small van will offer an electric option, with the production model’s design set to be previewed by a concept next month.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT has been teased, ahead of its full unveiling on May 10.

Previewed in a shadowy, stylised image overnight, the Concept EQT will serve as a “near-production” preview of an electric version of Mercedes-Benz‘s upcoming T-Class van-based people mover (teased in July 2020), set to share its underpinnings with the new-generation Renault Kangoo van that’s bound for Australia.

While the ‘regular’ T-Class has yet to be revealed, making design predictions difficult to make, the teaser image confirms the zero-emissions people mover will feature the Mercedes-Benz EQ sub-brand’s signature ‘face’, with one-piece headlights integrated into a large, closed-off black panel.

If previous EQ-badged show cars are any guide – think 2019’s Concept EQV, which previewed a production EQV for Europe – expect the Concept EQT’s styling features to carry over to production with few changes.

While powertrain specifications have yet to be confirmed, expect the production EQT (and likely the Concept, too) to share its mechanicals with the related Renault Kangoo E-Tech Electric, pairing a 44kWh lithium-ion battery to a 75kW/245Nm electric motor on the front axle.

That model claims a 265km range on Europe’s WLTP test cycle, with its 75kW DC fast-charging capability enabling a zero to 80 per cent charge in 42 minutes. 22kW AC charging is also available, allowing 80 per cent to be reached after two hours.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT will be unveiled on 10 May 2021 at 7pm AEST, with the reveal presentation to be hosted, curiously, by professional skateboarder Tony Hawk.
